Miraculous xenotransplantation

At the National Institute of Health in Maryland, some doctors successfully tried to keep alive a pig heart inside baboon’s abdomen for 2 years. This is an enormous step towards xenotransplantation, that is transplantation of cross-species organs. This experiment let researchers think that xenotransplantation in humans can actually happen.

The baboons were administered with immune-suppressing drugs, while the hearts selected were modified not to get the immune response to be too severe. The hearts were finally connected to the baboon’s circulatory system.

The team of doctors now hope to extend their work to humans!
