Hablas espanol? Parlez-vous francais? A few good reasons to learn a language

Reasons to learn a language

As the English language is so widely spoken, many of us do not bother to learn a second language, as we simply don’t deem it necessary. This is a great shame because learning a language can be hugely beneficial, exciting and fun. Need a little more convincing? Below are my top reasons to learn a language.

1. You’ll have a more authentic travelling experience
Travelling is not just about capturing the best photos, ticking the most famous tourist attractions off your list and staying in the nicest resorts. In fact, learning a foreign language will give you a much more authentic travelling experience, as it will bring you opportunities that you would not otherwise have: you’ll be able to interact with more people, and having an advanced knowledge of the language will enable you to have real conversations with them. Who knows, you could make a new best friend for life or even meet your soulmate that way.

2. To show respect to other cultures
When someone bothers to learn the language of the country they’re visiting, even if it’s just the very basics, it shows they respect the culture and locals will definitely appreciate this. Whether you’re travelling simply to see the sights, volunteering abroad or conducting business with people in a foreign country, your willingness to learn the language will no doubt get you far.

3. It makes you more employable
We live in world where companies are constantly expanding overseas and dealing with clients from across the globe, meaning knowledge of another language can come in extremely useful when seeking employment. Between two candidates with identical skill sets, the bilingual person is much more likely to be selected for a job, and studies show that being able to speak a foreign language has great economic benefits too

4. It’ll give you a better understanding of your own language
In order to learn another language, you’ll need to develop a good understanding of grammar, which will in turn give you a better understanding of your own language. In addition to this, many of the root words in that language’s vocabulary will help you at time when you’re struggling to understand words in English.

5. It’s immensely satisfying
Finally, finding that you can begin to understand a language in context is immensely satisfying. The most effective way to learn and maintain a language is to completely immerse yourself in it, so it provides you with the perfect excuse to go abroad do a bit of practice outside of the classroom.
